No matter your life experience or background, when you feel pain it can launch you into one of two directions. Your pain can isolate you or it can empower you.

When we feel isolated and alone in our pain we can withdraw and hold our stories very close to our hearts. By holding these stories close we can become depressed, addicted, fearful, sick, lonely, and even suicidal.

When we find the power in our stories and use them to connect our souls with the souls of others it liberates us from the chains of our isolation. By sharing our stories we can use them as a powerful elixir to heal ourselves, and others.

The problem…

Too many people are isolating in their pain and as a result we are experiencing an epidemic of disconnection. This is unnatural for us, as humans are wired to connect.

The solution…

We need to get back to “old school” connection – face to face and heart to heart – engaging in conversation, surrounding one another with a loving and understanding community. This is our most natural environment. We thrive in tribes.

For the last three years The Uncommon Woman has provided a safe and loving space for thousands of women who have painful stories to connect with others who understand their stories, and are there to listen, connect, support, and uplift.

The Uncommon Woman has opened up powerful healing dialogues that, although difficult at times, are necessary if we are going to heal, connect, and move forward into a new way of living and connecting.

My name is Marlo Ellis,

Founder and Visionary of The Uncommon Woman. Not that long ago I felt lost and isolated in my own painful story. I was spinning in a cycle of darkness and I began to feel that things were never going to get better. I was afraid to share my story for fear of being judged, or of not being believed. So, instead I said very little and masking my pain I went on trying to navigate through the darkness, alone. Allowing my soul to shrink back I found myself suffering in the silence of my own voice.

Somewhere deep inside I knew I could live differently because I saw others doing it but I had lost my confidence, my courage, and my sense of personal power. In the midst of the destructive cycle I had been in I felt I wasn’t good enough, strong enough, loved enough, smart enough, wealthy enough, or capable enough to get out of it in one piece. I didn’t know what I needed, but I also believed I didn’t have whatever it required.

The feelings of helplessness were eating me alive because it wasn’t who I had known myself to be. This pain had knocked me to my knees and I was struggling to get back up. It was something I had never experienced before, and I felt as if my life was falling apart. I was going to need new tools to get me out because the old ones weren’t working anymore.

And then a close friend who suspected that I had experienced abuse shared her abuse story with me, and although our stories were different, they left us feeling the same feelings of isolation and fear. As she shared her journey out of the abuse I realized that there was a possibility for change and I recognized that the more I talked about it the lighter I felt. I found myself seeking conversation and community. I needed to create more opportunities for healing through conversation and connection, so I started listening closer to other women and sharing my story with those who I felt needed to hear it and with each conversation both of us healed a little bit more.

The conversations became circles and the circles became a global community called The Uncommon Woman. The Uncommon Woman gives women safe and loving platforms to share their stories of strength from struggle in the hopes of healing themselves, while healing others in their own journey through their pain.

The women on the stages of The Uncommon Woman Tour will lift you and carry you in your pain as they share their stories. They are the people I was searching for in my darkest hours so I want to bring them to you so you see that you are no longer alone.

The women who speak on The Uncommon Woman stages are women with a powerful vision that goes far beyond their pain story. They are women who are part of a movement bigger than themselves. They are healers and soul shifters. They are leading the way through their connection and collective healing by sharing their stories from a place of vulnerability and truth, to help others see that even in the darkest nights we can find the light.

“The Uncommon Woman was the first event I have ever been to that gave me the opportunity to stand up and have a conversation with the speaker and connect to them in a personal and powerful way. That dialogue changed my life. I am forever grateful.”

Here’s what people say about The Uncommon Woman events and Marlo Ellis:

The Uncommon Woman Cross Country Tour has allowed women from all backgrounds the opportunity to share their story and let other women see they are not alone. Movements like this are created when one woman links arms with another and another. Our collective voices start a ripple effect of courage and Love. I am so proud to be a part of a group of women who are changing the lives of all people. When I speak I heal myself and allow others to see that they too can step into their truth. Thank You Marlo for following your vision by seeing stages full of women. Leah Parsons

When my world collided with Marlo’s in the spring of 2018, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. She had clarity of purpose, an unshakable vision and she oozed passion. Needless to say, I was thrilled when she invited me to speak at The Uncommon Woman event in Toronto a few months later. From the moment I walked into the space, the energy was palpable. I was greeted by powerful black and white images that lined the venue, whispering stories of pain and strength, suffering and resilience, loss and courage. This would set the tone for an unforgettable day of truth telling and inspiration. Marlo created such an intentional space of safety and love, where we could all exhale and open ourselves up to feel and reflect, connect and be seen. If I could choose a word to describe the experience, it would be Hope. Woman by woman, story by story, The Uncommon Woman helps shift the narrative around struggle to strength, and reminds us that a simple mixture of truth and love will indeed, set us free.
